Former Google head: AI will impact healthcare jobs

Former Google China President Kai-Fu Lee believes the rise of AI “will come in waves,” he told FOX Business. Lee, CEO of venture capital firm Sinovation Ventures, said healthcare is one of the industries that will benefit the most from AI.

Along with the benefits come the pitfalls—chiefly, job losses. The biggest job impact, he told FOX Business, will be on those that are routine, including white-collar, entry-level and blue-collar jobs.

As healthcare continues to shift toward AI, new reports suggest a need for changes in both education and workplace culture to cope with the transition and imminent impact on the workforce.

“As long as a job is routine, can be defined by an objective function and is quantitative in nature, over time, it will eventually get displaced," Lee said.

Lee also noted certain physicians—including radiologists—will “mostly” be displaced within 10 years. And, diagnosis of cancers will also be done via machine learning and AI algorithms.

“That doesn’t mean that radiologists will be out of work," he said. "They can move on to research, they can do more of the patient interaction. But a decent part of the job will be gone.”
