Anthem taps former Google search head to lead AI group

Anthem has hired Udi Manber, former head of engineering for Google’s core search products, to lead its artificial intelligence (AI) program, according to a report by CNBC.

Manber will be tasked with building and leading a team focused on AI applications. The move by Anthem was described as a signal that health insurer is looking to invest in technology and customer experience, according to the report.

“Manber is the first person at Anthem with that role, one of the people said, and he's the latest technologist to make the leap into health insurance, an industry that's incorporating digital tools and data science to control costs and improve coverage,” the report stated.

Prior to Google, Manber worked as a senior vice president in charge of algorithms at Amazon and a chief scientist at Yahoo.
