AMA Hails Interoperability Agreement between Carequality and CommonWell

Statement attributed to James L. Madara, M.D., Executive Vice President and CEO, American Medical Association

“As a founding member of the Sequoia Project's Carequality initiative, and an ardent advocate for nationwide interoperability in the digital health environment, the American Medical Association welcomes today’s alignment involving two national-level networks for sharing health data.

“We are thrilled that CommonWell Health Alliance, a leading health data sharing network of vendors, has announced they will implement the Carequality framework on behalf of their vendor members and their clients. The alignment will greatly increase the nationwide exchange of health data  that can be converted into actionable information for physicians as they care for patients. Under an agreement, Carequality and CommonWell will make it possible for more than 15,000 hospitals, clinics, and other health care organizations across dozens of networks to securely connect and share health information.

“Carequality continues to bring together a diverse group of representatives, including electronic health record vendors, record locator service providers and other types of existing networks from the private sector and government, to advance technical and policy agreements that enable electronic health information to be securely shared with physicians to ensure that patients are receiving the best care possible. The AMA is proud to be part of this inclusive, dynamic framework and welcomes CommonWell and its members on this journey together to make health information exchange the standard of care for all patients.“
