The Alliance for Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare (AAIH) has officially launched after the board of directors held the organization’s inaugural meeting earlier this month in San Francisco.
Formed last year, AAIH brings together industry leaders to promote the use of AI in healthcare and advocate for policies and regulations that promote rapid integration of the technology within the industry. Amazon Web Services (AWS), Bayer, GE Healthcare and Owkin are among the founding companies and organizations that make up its 22-person board of directors.
At the inaugural meeting, the board appointed executive officers and identified six standing committees that will oversee AAIH’s work in promoting the advancement of AI.
AAIH announced the following members as executive officers:
- John Baldoni, former senior vice president at GSK, was elected chair
- Brandon Allgood, co-founder and chief technology officer of Numerate, was elected vice chair
- Angeli Moeller, co-lead of AI and head of IT business partnering researcher at Bayer, was elected treasurer
- Naheed Kurji, president and chief executive officer of Cyclica, was elected secretary
“In selecting industry experts from established and emerging companies to lead AAIH, the Board has demonstrated its commitment to the integration of AI across the full spectrum of healthcare with the goal of improving patients’ lives by creating more efficient, sustainable and accessible biomedical research and healthcare systems,” Annastasiah Mudiwa Mhaka, PhD, AAIH president and senior advisor with Adjuvant Partners, said in a statement.
Additionally, the organization’s six standing committees are:
- Education and accreditation
- Federal engagement and regulatory affairs
- Investment and commercialization
- Communications
- Technology and standards development
- Industry performance and data analytics
Following its first meeting, the organization now plans to focus on developing strategies and initiatives aimed at educating the public about the benefits and risks of AI, promoting investment in AI-related research and development, and working with government officials to develop regulatory and technology standards.
“In recent years AI companies have begun implementing increasingly sophisticated machine learning techniques to significantly mitigate and, in some cases, eliminate inefficiencies in the current healthcare system,” Kurji said in a statement. “These innovations have accelerated growth of AI in the healthcare industry, and engendered enthusiasm and hope in consumers and patients alike. AAIH will work to collaboratively help bring these new health care advances to patients world-wide.”
